About Prof. Winnie Mitullah

Winnie V. Mitullah is a Research Professor at the Institute for Development Studies (IDS),
University of Nairobi (UoN). I currently chair the UoN UNESCO UNITWIN program, and
previously served as the Director of the IDS and Director of Gender Affairs, UoN. I hold a PhD in
Political Science and Public Administration from the University of York, UK. My doctoral
research focused on low-income urban housing policies. Over the years, my research and
consultancy work have centred on policies, institutions and governance, particularly the
provision and management of urban services and the roles of stakeholders in development,
micro and small enterprises, mobility and access, including public and non-motorised transport,
as well as identity issues covering women, youth, informality and social protection.
I have researched, consulted, published and collaborated with relevant stakeholders in my
areas of specialisation. The collaborations involve research, project development, evaluations,
publications, and facilitation of policy and governance processes. I have served on numerous
governance and policy technical teams at the University of the UoN, and at national and global
levels. I have also established extensive international research networks and secured funding
that supports research projects, student scholarships, and academic exchange programmes
across local and international universities.
