MTN Group is transforming from a telecom provider into a major AI infrastructure player, identifying South Africa and Nigeria as priority markets for AI-enabled data centre development. In July 2025, MTN launched the first phase of its Sifiso Dabengwa Data Centre in Lagos, the largest data centre in West Africa, currently offering 4.5MW of capacity with a planned expansion to 14MW-20MW. A second AI data centre is planned for South Africa. Beyond centralised facilities, MTN plans to convert its vast network of African towers into a distributed AI inference computing grid, leveraging its pan-African scale to build infrastructure serving over 300 million customers across 16 markets.
