S.K Macharia - Founder, Royal Media Services

Samuel Kamau Macharia, popularly known as S.K. Macharia, is a Kenyan entrepreneur and media proprietor, best known as the founder and chairman of Royal Media Services (RMS)—one of Kenya’s largest private radio and television networks. Its flagship outlets include Citizen TV and Radio Citizen, both of which command significant national audiences.

Macharia founded Royal Media Services in the late 1990s with modest resources, driven by a desire to expand access to independent broadcasting in a then largely state-controlled media environment. Under his leadership, RMS has grown into a dominant media house in East Africa, operating over 14 radio stations broadcasting in multiple local languages and reaching audiences across the country.

A strong advocate for culturally relevant content, Macharia championed broadcasting in Kiswahili and vernacular languages to better connect with rural communities and promote local storytelling—an approach that has become a defining feature of RMS programming.

His impact on the media industry has earned international recognition. In 2012, Forbes Africa described him as “Africa’s Ted Turner”, highlighting his transformative influence in the region. He was also honored with the 2015 Eastern Africa Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Lifetime Achievement Award.

Despite facing early legal and regulatory challenges, including attempts to shut down his operations, Macharia successfully defended RMS’s independence through the courts. Today, his legacy is reflected in RMS’s expansive reach and enduring influence, with Citizen TV consistently ranking among the most-watched television stations in Kenya and RMS radio networks reaching a substantial majority of the population.
